The medieval period can be called this from many reasons but most of them were controlled by the church and how they had a crippling effect oft he people. The church restrained what people could do and accomplish. The Medieval period was called “Dark” because of the ignorant reliance on religion. Everything from art to the architecture and the medieval human mind was centered around religion or adoration of a higher power. The church prohibited the freedom of any kind of artistic expression which turned the lights out on literature and art in that time.
The art of the medieval time got its name of darkness by much of the art being based entirely on religion. it was considered ''An era of ignorance, superstition, or social chaos or repression.'' http://www.answers.com/topic/dark-ages'' lot of art was produced during this time but much is lost due to it being mostly dome in unwritten or recorded history.Medieval art had its own art style or appearance. So each piece was looked at in greater detail than before. This is mostly do to the fact that there were many different art periods or movements. they were, Early Christian art, Migration Period art, Celtic art, Byzantine art, Islamic art, Pre-Romanesque and Romanesque art, and Gothic art.Medieval art includes many mediums, and was especially strong in sculpture, Illuminated manuscripts and mosaics. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medieval_art). The most popular or famous art style is the gothic art period. Gothic art depended mostly on craft, time, and place. This time period was called ark because of the dark and depressing colors used during the time period. Most of the colors used were black brown and grey. the preponderance of this art was connected to religion. TI was mostly a picture or a scene from the bible depicting a saint or another holy figure. The people were limited to what they could do because the church had a huge grip on what the people could depict in their art. This is because the church had the higher authority at the time and could not be swayed into a different decision. With that the artists felt obliged to paint somebody form the bible. Because of this the art seamed kind of identical with holy figures and saints. With that in mind it can be said the artist was crippled in his freedom to paint what the saw.
III. Medieval Literature
The literature of the dark ages can accord as to why the dark ages was called the dark ages. The literature coves a vast amount of areas from simple to the really complex. There was only one used language at the tome and that was Latin because the church was the only source of education at the time. They used a special literary system which spread quickly over Europe, which was Serbian literature. This system had Christian poetry, stories, and other essentials for a well-rounded Christian life. Despite its popularity, it did not have an overwhelming influence on their own original work.(http://www.serbianunity.net/culture/history/Hist_Serb_Culture/chd/Medieval_literature.html) Writers were often restricted at the time from the church on what freedoms they could write about and how they could go about to do it. These lead authors with limited choices like either to embellish on pieces of work already written or try to make their own original piece based on the limitation of the church. These works were the dominant form of literature during the middle ages. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medieval_literature This aspect was very intimidating to the writers because one mistake and they could be punished to the full extent of the law at the time. This caused much of the medieval literature to not be credited to any one because if there was something that went against the church then the person responsible could not be held responsible. Some of the most famous pieces are Beowulf, Digenis Acritas, and The Cloud of Unknowing. Beowulf is an epic about a hero who kills a terrible monster that terrorized many people. This epic can be considered the most important piece of written work from the Anglo saxon period. Digenis Acritas another epic dome at the time is about a hero that is known by many folksong and story tellers. Lastly the Cloud of Unknowing is about a guild on how to speak and see god. The dark aspect of this is the fact that there was a lack of documents from this period. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medieval_literature

Historical events can also be affiliated on why it is called the dark ages. Originally, the concept of the European Dark Ages began as an ideological campaign by humanists to promote Classical culture, and was therefore not a neutral historical analysis. http://www.arthistoryclub.com/art_history/Dark_Ages However, thhe name also refered to the church limiting the people on such things such as art, literature, and architecture due to their beliefs. During this time the church had absolute power and influence on its people. ''Any opposition to the Catholic church resulted in excommunication.'' http://www.middle-ages.org.uk/middle-ages-religion.htm.This is because separation of church and state was not a common practice yet. However, Catholics didn't view this period as "dark". Catholics viewed this period as a "harmonious, productive religious" era. http://www.allabouthistory.org/the-dark-ages.htm They forced everyone to become a christian. "The History of the Dark Ages." They ruled and governed by how they saw fit and anyone who questioned them would be smited. The church believed is there right to destroy any other type of thinking and mold the world in their own vision. And to deal with any own who opposed this they were punished or even tortured. These took out any one who they believed was not worth enough to have their own moral values. the Inquisition was all about religious figures heads sent out to find and expose those who and fallen from grace and was no longer scene in the eyes of god. . The people exposed were put on trial which most of the time did not end well for the accused. Another aspect was Feudalism. Feudalism was an idea created by William the Conqueror. This idea was about land being exchanged for military service. Then the land would be divided by the church and used how they saw fit. A special type of control was crated to help maintain control and order. this caused many people to rebel and stand up to the al power full church. Feudalism was utalmy destroyed by the Black death that cam about in Europe. ''The black death was, ''one of the deadliest pandemics in human history, peaking in Europe between 1347 and 1351. '' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Death) However, feudalism is heavily debated because some claim "virtually none of it is accurate." (http://historymedren.about.com/od/feudalism/a/feudalism.htm)
In conclusion the dark ages was dark de to a number of reasons. But most of them were centered on how the church had complete control over the people who could not do much about it without being punished. Everyone believed in God and the afterlife, and England’s church made the population believe that the only way to get access to Heaven was through the Roman Catholic Church’s approval. So the church controlled freedom of expression over the people. The church put restriction on what the people could paint, and write.
This devastating event in history exemplifies the power of the church and the direct influence that it had on the people living during the medieval times. Due to the fact that “separation of church and state” was not even an idea yet, the clergy held the cards and governed the land how they saw fit. The church thought that it was their divine right to interfere with any opposing religious beliefs or ideals, leading them to combat that opposition with means of violence and torture in some cases. The Inquisition was a way for narrow minded, “god-fearing” folk to weed out those who were not worthy of expressing their own moral values. Inquisitors were religious figures that were sent to different areas to expose those who had “fallen from grace.” These discoveries resulted with the accused scoundrel on trial for what they felt; unfortunately these trials usually did not end in favor of the accused. An aspect that contributes to why the Dark Ages were dark was the concept of Feudalism. This concept was introduced by William the Conqueror, leader of the Norman invasion who was crowned king. This concept means that land is exchanged for military service, in which the land is divided by the king, the church, and Norman soldiers and nobles. A "pyramid of power" was created to maintain control, along with the creation of castles to control the population. However, rebellion ensued, as many people did not agree with feudalism. There were two rebellions, one led by King Harold's family, and by Herward the Wake, both of which were unsuccessful. ''Feudalism fell into a decline when the Black Death came around Europe.'' (http://www.middle-ages.org.uk/feudalism-in-england.htm)-
An event why the medieval period is called "dark" is because of the viking invasions in 787-1066 AD. They were raiding pirates and stole horses while causing disasters. They attacked people anywhere but mainly France. The other people attacked were the Holy Roman Empire and other Christian countries in Europe. This connects to the Medieval period being "dark" because these life changing wars, battles, and invasions like this one caused the people of this time to be scared, freedom less, and poor. They only left when they acquired sufficient loot or bribes." http://www.crystalinks.com/vikings.html (wilda)

Another event was the Norman Conquest. This is another invasion in 1066AD of the Kingdom of England. The leader of Normandy (William) lead them and replaced the ruling class in England with French-speaking monarchy, aristocracy, and clerical hierarchy. they got rid of all the traditions and styles of those people who were there and forced their beliefs and language on them. this contributes to dark because of the fighting and people still aren't able to lead the lives the way they want to it was pressed and reinforced upon the people of England. Feudalism fell into a decline when the Black Death came around Europe. "Many buildingd were pillaged, burned, destroyed by the Viking Raids. Many monastaries were pillaged and all abbeys were destroyed.
"The Englishmen suffered many casualties."http://normanconquest.co.uk/ (wilda).
